(?-1206)
He was the younger brother of Sultan Ghiyas al-Din Ghauri who handed over the government of Ghazni to him in 1173. Beginning with a campaign against the Qaramitah of Multan in 1175, Muhammad Ghauri brought the whole of Punjab under his control by ousting the last Ghaznavid ruler Khusrau Malik from Lahore in 1186. In 1192, he occupied Ajmer and Delhi after defeating the Chahamana ruler Prithviraja III. By 1204, Bihar and Bengal were overrun by the Khalji officers paying allegiance to him. He left the administration of conquered territories in India outside Bengal to his slave Qutb al-Din Aibek. Muhammad Ghauri and his brother, Ghiyas al-Din, how-ever, were not very successful against their Turkish adversaries in Central Asia. They suffered a humiliating defeat at Adkhund in 1203. Muhammad Ghauri was assassinated by a Khokhar tribesman in 1206.
